Sueca Tutorial

Needed

40 card deck (Standard deck with 10s, 9s, and 8s removed); four players, pen and paper for scorekeeping

Setup

Four players are divided into two teams. Teammates sit across from each other.

Deal

The player right of the dealer will shuffle the cards. The player left of the dealer will cut the cards. Each player is dealt ten cards, all ten cards at a time. The bottom card of the cards dealt to the dealer is shown to all players. The suit of this card is the trump suit of the round. Hearts will be trump for this round.

Objective

The objective of the game is to be the first team to win four game points. A game point is won by winning over 60 card points during a round. The amount of card points awarded are based on the value of the cards you and your partner win in tricks. The total points possible by cards are 120 each round.

Card Rank

Highest to lowest - Ace, 7, King, Jack, Queen, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2

Game Play

The player right of the dealer leads the first trick. Each other player must play a card in the same suit that was led whenever possible. The player with the highest ranking trump suited card wins the trick. If no trump suited cards are played, the player with the highest ranking card in the lead suit wins the trick. The player that wins the trick leads the next trick.

Play continues until all cards have been played. If a player is unable to play a card in the lead suit, the player can play any card.

Scoring

At the end of the round, players on the same team will combine the card points won during the round. The team that scores over 60 card points are awarded one game point. The first team to four game points wins the game.

Card Point Values

  • Each Ace: 11 points

  • Each 7: 10 points

  • Each King: 4 points

  • Each Jack: 3 points

  • Each Queen: 2 points

  • 6-2: No points

Rules

  • If a team gets 91 or more card points in a round, the team is awarded two game points.

  • If a team wins every trick in a round, the team is awarded four game points and wins the game.

  • If both teams tie with 60 game points each in a round, the game point is carried over to the next round, making the next round worth two game points.
